Reasons to Create a Community Garden with vacant land in Haiti 🇭🇹

If you’ve found your way to this blog post it is probably because you have land in Haiti that is currently doing nothing, so let’s talk about how adding a community garden can add value to your land and your community.

First, a little bit about me. I moved to Cap Haitian, Haiti, in 2022, to manage family assets, and upon arrival I learned that my parents owned over 10 pieces of land. In my experience living in Haiti, land is very vulnerable to usurpation by those with power and influence, local gangs, and neighboring owners that build past the property limits simply because they notice that the land is unoccupied, so it was very important for me to quickly establish ownership and value to these pieces of land.

A couple of these pieces of land  had boundary walls, but most did not, so my first plan of action was addressing security. After putting minimum security measures in place, I started brainstorming business ideas, and my heart landed on a community garden. For this garden, I chose their second largest piece of land which was a little over 1 acre, and already had a boundary wall. Throughout the process of starting a garden, I have been able to create employment, grow and give food, and secure my land all while contributing positively to the environment.

Now, that you’ve gotten to read about how the garden has been beneficial to me, here are a few additional reasons why this may be an option for you:

  1. Create job opportunities for family members that you support in Haiti. Instead of supporting them for free, you can now pay them for working your land.

  2. Food production for family members and people that you support in Haiti.

  3. Regular activity on your land which creates a base layer of security.

  4. A business venture in food production and/or animal production.

  5. Increase land value
